One of the reasons that silk bed sheets is so mysterious is because not much is really known about it and it’s hard to find… it’s also confused a lot with satin bedding. Knowing the difference is really important because when you spend the money on silk, you want to know for a fact that you are getting quality silk. Something that you have to know is that satin is not really a type of sheet, but a method of weaving fabric. That doesn’t mean that satin sheets are bad because good quality ones can be extremely nice. So now you are going to learn how you know when you have real silk and not a knock off.
A certain type of silk worm is responsible for making the purest quality of silk called mulberry silk. This is going to sound really strange, but the best way determine if it’s real silk is to burn it. It doesn’t seem right… the fact that you have to burn your sheets to determine if they are real doesn’t seem right. You don’t have to because good silk retailers will provide a small silk sample for you to test.
When you burn the silk, you will find that the ash that is produced very light and soft. It’s really quite amazing. If you have a satin bedding then the ash will be really hard. This is the best way to test because the next way can be tough for some people.
Knowing what to feel when touching the fabric is the next best way to determine real silk. Silk has a feel of substance to it and it’s really soft too… softer than you would expect it to be. Satin on the other hand not only looks like a harsher fabric but it also feels much more rough in comparison. When you feel them back to back, you will be able to determine without a doubt which is which.
